Using the H5P Drag The Words Tool

The H5P Drag The Words tool contains text-based questions with blank sections that students complete with corresponding text answers. The student drags an answer into the blank section.

This exercise can also ask students to drag items in the correct order. Feedback can be added to each of the blank spaces to help the student find the right answer.

Immediate feedback and scores are given to reinforce students’ learning. Students have the opportunity to answer the question multiple times until they get it right.

Below are the steps to use the H5P drag the words tool:

Step One: Create a New Drag The Words Tool Object


1. Using the dropdown menu, set your Content Type to Drag The Words.

Note: If you click on the name of the object type, a summary of the tool and an option for a demonstration will appear. If satisfied with your tool selection, click Use. If you do not require this step, click Use from the content type menu.

2. Add a Title that will be easy to remember and find.

H5P is very user friendly. While exploring, you will see options to Tour, the possibility to see Demos, and a range of Examples. Click these while creating objects to get inspiration and ideas.

3. Enter a task description.

4. Read the Instructions about the text. 

In the Text field, type the complete text including the words that students will drag. The draggable words are marked with an asterisk at each end like this: *word*.

You can also add a textual tip (or hint), using a colon (:) in front of the tip. Example: H5P content may be edited using a *browser: Something you use every day*.

Note: If you need to display an asterisk, type another asterisk before it like this: **.

5. Define any custom feedback you would like for score ranges. This is not compulsory. 

Step Two: Adjust Settings 


1. Click Behavioural Settings and select any options you would like for your object. Enable Retry lets users attempt the object as many times as they like. Enable "Show Solution" button  will display a button to students that when clicked, will reveal the solution.

2. Click Text overrides and translations to adjust the language used on the zones and buttons. It also has options to alter the text that is read by readspeakers for greater accesibility. These are great options when confidently creating a complex object however, for a basic starting point, all fields can remain with default text. 

3. Enter your College, Discipline and a Description. The description will contextualise your object when sharing it with others, but cannot be seen by students.

4. The H5P options that appear at the bottom of the screen determine the accessibility of the tool. Set your preferences before you Save.

Select Shared to enable other staff to copy this learning object to use in their spaces.

Select Send Grades to VU Collaborate if you have a grade item enabled and would like the marks to be sent straight through to a connected gradebook.

Display buttons will give users clickable buttons to embed your learning tool elsewhere, download the learning tool, and assign copyright to your tool. 

Copyright button enables users to display copyright button as part of the learning tool. 

Click Add another Author and type the name of the staff member that you wish to add as an additional or co-editor / author for this H5P interactive. You can add multiple additional authors. 
This will allow another staff member to edit, clone, save and use your H5P object.

5. Once completed, click Save at the bottom of the screen.

This will redirect you to the list of all Obejcts. From here, you can Edit, Clone, Insert or Delete

Step Three: Test the Activity


You can check how the Drag The Words activity is working after you have saved it. You can save and check your work at any time.

1. Find the object you've just saved, and click Insert.

2. This will open a preview of the tool. You can test dragging the text from the right-hand side of the window, to the blanks in each sentence.

3. If you find that you need to make changes, click the Edit button in the object menu.

Step Four: Publish the Drag The Words Object


When you are finished, you can add your Drag Text activity to VU Collaborate in your chosen module.

1. In your preview screen, click Insert in the bottom left-hand corner of the window.

2. This will add the object to wherever you're working, and you can see it as it will appear to the student. If you're working in a document, you can now add and edit other media.

3. When you're ready to publish your new object into the space, click Publish.
